Hi Jay: I don't think Office 2016 will prevent you from reading the old documents. They work fine here.

El Capitan will prevent you running Word 2004, because it does not include the Rosetta run-time support that Office 2004 needs. But Word 2016 should open Office 2004 documents straight up.
