I bought this iMac new in 2007 with the three-year AppleCare Protection Plan in December 2007 to replace an aging iBook G3 that failed with the shim-fix being used for months. Upon unboxing the product, I discovered that it had Mac OS X v 10.4.10 installed on the computer, however, the 10.5 Up-To-Date DVD was included with the restore discs.

Unboxing the product was relatively easy. Simply just lift the foam and lift the computer out of the box. Gotta love Apple packaging. I then removed the packaging protection on the computer itself and fired it up. Initial Impressions: Before I had this computer, I was using an iBook from 2003. That computer was pretty slow for me, even back in 2007.

When I booted up the iMac, I was blown away at the speed. It only took about 20 or so seconds from the time the computer was powered on to the time the setup assistant appeared. After putting in my information, I was set. I upgraded to 10.5 and immediately installed 4 GB of memory so the computer would not have to resort to virtual memory. This computer did everything I tossed at it without a problem, such as HandBrake, Final Cut Express encodes, and iDVD rendering, whereas the iBook would suffer a near meltdown trying to do similar things. However, do not touch the top of the computer when running intensive programs, cause it gets EXTREMELY hot and can burn your hands EASILY. All was good until May of 2008, when it did some very strange things.

Problems: I was listening to some music at mid volume and the computer just turned off without warning. I turned it back on and continued to use it, thinking that it was just something with the power. It turned off about ten minutes later again.

I turned it on a third time and this time it stayed on, however, the right speaker sounded a bit off compared to the way it was before. I turned it off for the night and went to bed because I did not want to deal with it that night. I woke up to the middle of the night to what I thought was a fire, with the bright light and sounds that I was hearing. Turns out that the iMac decided to turn on by itself without it being set to.

A simple SMC reset fixed that problem, however, I did not trust this computer, so I unplugged it until I took it to the Apple Store the next day. They had to replace the power supply and right speaker, which was covered by AppleCare. After that, it was working right for about two years and worked with SL (10.6) when it was released. It brought even more speed to it than I thought was possible! Then the optical drive suddenly stopped reading DVDs and Windows 7 would cause the graphics card to overheat and shift colors due to the lack of thermal management drivers supplied with Boot Camp. I took it into Apple again and this time they said there was no problem with it.

A year later, the drive stopped burning DVDs/CDs and started to have trouble reading CDs too. The graphics was starting to change colors on OS X. By this time, the AppleCare was expired, however after I complained to the Genius at the Apple Store, he replaced the graphics card without the labor charges and only charged for the card itself. Of course, they were not able to reproduce the DVD drive issue in the store, so that was not replaced. All was good for about six months, then the graphics card started to overheat again.

At this point, I just said screw it and sold it for parts, and bought a used MacBook Pro with the money I got from this computer. Pros: Fast Responsive Handles intensive programs easily Apple Support was extremely knowledgeable with the issues I was having Cons: The Mac only lasted five months without problems!
